In this interview for AgroNews, Gemma Tedó, Director of the Innovation Group at Lucta, explains how the GO Olivebiome project is working to transform olive by-products, such as alperujo, into functional ingredients for animal feed.
The goal is clear: to improve the resilience and health of pig and poultry livestock through natural solutions like prebiotics and probiotics, reducing antibiotic use and promoting more sustainable farming.
🔬 What progress did Gemma Tedó highlight?
Bioactive compounds with beneficial properties for gut microbiota have been identified in agro-industrial waste. In later phases of the project, their effectiveness will be evaluated under real farm conditions.
♻️ What impact does the project have?
OLIVEBIOME is a clear example of circular economy: it gives a second life to waste that, through biotechnological processes, is transformed into useful and sustainable ingredients. It also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal.
🤝 Who is involved?
Lucta works closely with Maslina, FEUGA, and San Miguel Arcangel S.A —partners in the consortium— forming a synergy that combines science, innovation, and environmental commitment.

In a recent interview published by Agronews Castilla y León, our colleague Íñigo Pariza —a biologist with a Master’s in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine— shares his insights on the innovative work we are carrying out at Maslina together with the Olivebiome Operational Group.
The project focuses on revalorizing by-products from the agri-food industry —especially from olive cultivation— and transforming them into functional ingredients that, when incorporated into animal feed, can help improve livestock health and well-being.
What benefits are expected in terms of animal health and performance?
Pariza explains that, in this initial phase of the project, various by-products with potential prebiotic properties are being studied. These components could help strengthen animals’ gut health during their early stages of development — a critical period for preventing common diseases and promoting healthier growth.
In addition, these by-products are treated with probiotic bacterial strains isolated from table olives, aiming to further enhance their benefits on the animals’ digestive system.
What types of by-products are being studied?
Although the main focus is on olive by-products, the team is also evaluating by-products from asparagus, oats, tomatoes, and grapes. The goal is to identify which of them deliver the best results in terms of animal health, sustainability, and production efficiency.
OLIVEBIOME will be present at the 7th Fair of Organic Products, Healthy Living, and Responsible Consumption

The 7th Organic Products, Healthy Living and Responsible Consumption Fair will be held at the Santander Conference and Exhibition Centre, from April 4th to 6th. This event has established itself as a benchmark in innovation and sustainability, offering a wide representation of entrepreneurs who are transforming the socio-economic reality of Cantabria towards a fairer, greener and more responsible model.
OLIVEBIOME, through its partner MASLINA, will be present at the fair. We invite all interested parties to visit their stand, where MASLINA professionals will be available to answer questions and share information about the project.
This is a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the latest innovations in the field of circular bioeconomy and discover how initiatives like OLIVEBIOME are contributing to sustainable development.
The OLIVEBIOME webinar is now available on YouTube.
OLIVEBIOME will be present at the 6th Abanca Cimag-GandAgro Professional Fair for Machinery, Agriculture, and Livestock

The 6th Professional Trade Fair for Machinery, Agriculture and Livestock, Abanca Cimag–GandAgro, will be held at the ABANCA International Fair of Galicia (Silleda) from February 20th to 22nd. This event has established itself as a benchmark for agricultural innovation, offering professionals in the primary sector a space for networking, analysis, and business.
OLIVEBIOME, through its representative partner FEUGA, will be present at the fair. FEUGA will conduct the technical seminar “Reuse of Agricultural and Livestock Byproducts to Promote the Circular Economy,” in which the objectives, activities, and expected results of several ongoing projects, including OLIVEBIOME, will be explained.
We also invite all interested parties to visit their stand (G13), where FEUGA professionals will be available to answer any questions. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the latest innovations transforming the agricultural sector and contributing to the sustainable development of our rural areas.
OLIVEBIOME Project Launch Webinar

The Supra-regional Operational Group OLIVEBIOME presents its project to transform by-products of the olive agro-industry into prebiotics and probiotics for the feed of the poultry and pig sectors.
The Supra-regional Operational Group OLIVEBIOME will organize a free online Webinar next Wednesday, February 12, at 10:30 a.m. to present the innovation project “Biotechnological development of pre- and probiotics aimed at animal feed (poultry and swine) from olive pomace fiber and other horticultural by-products”. This initiative aims to improve the resilience of the pig and poultry sectors to the effects of climate change, by utilizing by-products from the olive agro-industry and other agro-industrial sources.
The OLIVEBIOME project seeks to explore the prebiotic and probiotic potential of by-products derived from the olive industry and their combination with other agro-industrial by-products, in order to reduce the use of antibiotics in animal production and improve the intestinal health of farm animals.
OLIVEBIOME es un esfuerzo conjunto de diversas entidades de liderazgo en el sector, comprometidas con la economía circular y la sostenibilidad. This working group is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and with the principles of the European Green Deal, especially with the “Farm to Fork” initiative, which promotes more sustainable, healthy and efficient agri-food systems.
During the Webinar, the objectives, activities in development and progress of the project will be presented. In addition, attendees will be able to learn about the sustainable innovation actions that OLIVEBIOME is implementing to improve the quality of animal production, optimize fermentation processes, and promote the sustainable management of by-products.
The webinar will feature presentations from representatives of some of the entities participating in the OLIVEBIOME Operational Group, who will share their vision and the key role they play in the project. Among the speakers will be the Galician University-Business Foundation (FEUGA), San Miguel Arcángel S.A., Maslina International Trade, S.L. and Lucta S.A. However, the OLIVEBIOME Operational Group is not limited to these entities, as the consortium also includes entities such as AINIA, the Instituto de la Grasa-CSIC, Microomics Systems S.L., and the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA).
