In a recent interview published by Agronews Castilla y León, our colleague Íñigo Pariza —a biologist with a Master’s in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine— shares his insights on the innovative work we are carrying out at Maslina together with the Olivebiome Operational Group.
The project focuses on revalorizing by-products from the agri-food industry —especially from olive cultivation— and transforming them into functional ingredients that, when incorporated into animal feed, can help improve livestock health and well-being.
What benefits are expected in terms of animal health and performance?
Pariza explains that, in this initial phase of the project, various by-products with potential prebiotic properties are being studied. These components could help strengthen animals’ gut health during their early stages of development — a critical period for preventing common diseases and promoting healthier growth.
In addition, these by-products are treated with probiotic bacterial strains isolated from table olives, aiming to further enhance their benefits on the animals’ digestive system.
What types of by-products are being studied?
Although the main focus is on olive by-products, the team is also evaluating by-products from asparagus, oats, tomatoes, and grapes. The goal is to identify which of them deliver the best results in terms of animal health, sustainability, and production efficiency.
